Guild Of taxidermists rules and regulations book

Here's some of the development work for my layouts for the rules and regulations book, I didn't really record this as well as I could have done, it seems that all the systems I had in place quite early on in the project seem to have gone out the window as I rush madly to get everything done. This isn't ideal but I guess I'll learn from it. I'm pretty sure next time I will spend 3-4 days before I even begin designing at the start of the brief putting in very thorough and methodical timeplanning procedures etc. Anyway a lot of decisions with the book are informed by the rest of the things I've done, the font is Gill Sans book to have it run alongside the logo well. I put the tools into the design because I wanted to add a bit of interest because the pages were looking a little bland by themselves. I added the line dividers into the layout to create seperation in the sections and add a bit of an interesting dynamic. I worked usin a 6 column grid because I wanted to create a bit of a border around the page layout to allow the type to breathe in quite a minimal setting.

Rule and regulation book covers

Order of The Magi

I exported these images for the order of the magi book cover form illustrator because I'm an idiot and forgot about the bounding box issue, so the images above are absolutely redundent, other than to demonstrate that despite you not being able to tell how they're different, there is a numerical value to the amount of things I tired out. It's disappointing and I just don't have the energy this close to the deadline to re-document it. It's my fault and if I lose marks for this then on my head be it.

The UK guild of Taxidermists

With the guild of Taxidermists book cover for their rules and regulations, it was essentially creating type in the same style as the membership card and finding where it sits best amongst the tools. I tried a few things but it seemed to look awkward on the page evrywhere except the bottom, where it seemed to sit quite nicely, and that is where it will stay.

Flat Earth Society:

The rules and regulations booklet cover initially used the flat earth model diagram that I'd designed, but this was just didn't seem to work as well as I'd of liked it to, and also I wanted to tie it to the membership card more closely, so I went with those colour choices. The type for the cover is Adobe Caslon Pro, which I used for the typography on the logo in the end.

Flat Earth Society welcome letter/letterheads

The guild of Taxidermists was difficult, in the sense that my communications with him seemed to have fizzled out and the website doesn't give a contact address, in fact it asks members to refrain from sending him post because he's having trouble with his PO box. I experimented with a few layouts and used Adobe Caslon Pro for the body copy to reflect it's presence in the logo and to tie the products together.

This was a good opportunity to bring in the flat earth model that I've tried to incorporate subtly into the design of this project. Unfortunately I think it gets in the way of legibility in this instance, so I've settled for making it into the back page of the letterhead, once again trying to ensure that the letterhead looks considered in it's design.

Order Of the Magi Welcome Letter/Letter head

I decided because of the necessity of speed to use the same grid for all of the letterheads, as you can see I tried a few variations out before deciding on the standard format that the guild of taxidermists letterhead used of havin the address st at the bottom. I used futura because the wors 'member' on the membership card seemed to look best in futura and I wanted to carry this through the range of products in order to tie them together. Again I used a reasonably large font size of 10pt because my potential audience is so broad, I have to account for those that who may have difficulty with their eyesight.

I thought it would be interesting to carry the gold colour and logo into a double sided letterhead, making it feel more considered. I tried just the plain gold colour as well as the logo and simply the words 'The Orer Of The Magi' I think because the logo is so delibertely ambiguous I felt drawn to using the words to really ensure a bit of clarity with the product, however, the logo looks really strong reversed out.

Guild Of Taxidermists Welcome letter/letterhead

I created an 8 column grid for the letter to sit in, this allowed me to create a really wide margin that provides a lot of negative space for the type to sit in, avoiding the worry of overcrowding.

I generated some content with all the appropriate information about what the membership pack contains. Point size was a consideration, whilst I'm not generally a fan of type of a size bigger than 8 pt. for body copy, I have to consider the fact that this letter is to be sent to all new members of which some may have difficulties with their eyesight. With this in mind, I set the type at 10 pt. to ensure maximum readability. With the header taking such a wide space of the document, my initial thought was to place the address along the bottom to mirror this, it seems acceptable but I'm going to try a few things out to see if there's a better way to do it.

I then had to set the entire thing in Gill in order to keep with the stylistic choices I've been making with this project based on the type setting of the logo. I also changed the leading of the address to +294, the same as the logo to try and tie the type together.

I experimented with left aligning the logo and setting the address to the right of it, but it made the letter look extremely top heavy.

I tried to generate some more space between the two by aligning them to the margins rather than the inner columns, but this along with the type being aligned to the inner margins made it sit on the page in an extremely weird way. The type no longer looked tightly grided and seemed a bit untidy.

I tried to invert it to see if this made a difference but the issue was in the gridding of the assets rather than the way round they were presented.

I then tried center aligning the address under the logo, but again this seemed top heavy and the header began to take up too much space.

I then tried laying the address out on one line underneath the header, and this looked a lot better, but I still preferred the address being placed at the bottom, the symmetry that it created was more interesting to me.
